From the everlasting serenity of the deserts to the lively buzz of the city, Dubai is the most happening city not only of United Arab Emirates but also in the Middle East. Dubai belongs to the federation of United Arab Emirates, however, it can easily be distinguished from other emirates of UAE as an active city offering kaleidoscope of attractions for visitors.

The history of Dubai can be traced back to 150 years; however, the emirate of Dubai was officially created in 1971 along with the formation of United Arab Emirates. The city of Dubai has the largest population in UAE and contains second largest geographic area after Abu Dhabi. Along with Abu Dhabi, Dubai owns a veto power over critical matters of national importance in the UAE. About 71% of Dubai population consists of foreigners and expatriates and 3% is categorized as “western”. Emigrates in Dubai mostly include Asians, mainly from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Filipino. The official language of Dubai is Arabic but due to massive number of emirates English, Urdu, Hindi, Malayalam and Bengali are extensively spoken. Although Dubai is an Islamic emirate, the non-Muslim communities are permitted to practice their own religion freely, however, distribution of religious pamphlets and brochures are strictly banned.

The significant presence of ports and natural resources boost the economy of Dubai . The ports of Dubai offers flourishing business prospect for western manufacturers. Besides, natural resources like petroleum and natural gas contribute around 3% of the UAE's gross domestic product. The port area is gradually growing as a busy hub for service industries including the new Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), finance and IT centers. Moreover the rapidly expanding national airline Emirates is also responsible for reinforcing the transport links and economy of Dubai simultaneously. These economic free zones hugely contribute to the rising financial systems of Dubai . The Dubai Media City and the Dubai Internet city together houses one such enclave consisting IT firms such as Microsoft, EMC Corporation, IBM and Oracle Corporation, and media organizations like CNN, MBC, AP, ARY and Reuters.

The demography of Dubai comprises a varied mixture of different nationalities and cultures, best reflected in Dubai 's cuisine. Dubai is a prosperous and wealthy city and referred to as the shopping center of the Middle East. Dubai is genuinely a duty free shopper's ecstasy that offers more for your money.

Burj Dubai (Arabic: برج دبي‎ "Dubai Tower") is a supertall skyscraper currently under construction in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. When it is completed in late 2008, it is predicted to be the tallest man-made structure in the world. Scheduled for occupancy in September 2009, the building is part of a 2 km² (0.8 sq mi) development called 'Downtown Dubai' and is located at the "First Interchange" (aka "Defence Roundabout") along Sheikh Zayed Road at Doha Street.

The tower's architect is Adrian Smith[3] who worked with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) until 2006.[4] SOM is the architecture and engineering firm in charge of the project.[3] The primary builder is Samsung Engineering & Construction, along with Besix and Arabtec.[5] Third party peer review has been performed by CBM Engineers.

The total budget for the Burj Dubai project is about $4.1 billion US and for the entire new 'Downtown Dubai', $20 billion US.

Current height and timeline of events

As of 5 February 2008, Burj Dubai has reached a height of 604.9 m (1,985 ft), with 159 completed floors.[6]

Dubai Beaches

Dubai's main beaches run along Jumeira Road. In truth, it is one long beach divided up by hotels and private clubs, interspaced by a few public access beaches.

The Jumeira beaches have soft white sand that slip into the shallow warm turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf. Hotel beaches are very well maintained with luxury facilities. This usually means lawns and swimming pools with beachside food and beverage service.

The public has access to use private or hotel beach clubs with daily rates that vary from $10 to $50.

There is also a public beach at Al Mamzar Park on the Deira side of the Creek. The public facilities include playgrounds, barbecue sites, food kiosks, and picnic areas for families.

January temperatures are pleasant so the beaches are full of Europeans. Summer temperatures can reach 45-50 degrees centigrade with equally high humidity.

Dubai Restaurants

Dubai has a truly extensive choice of great international restaurants. Most of them are located in the larger hotels. Many visitors find it hard to beat dining on the deck over looking The Creek at Vivaldi in the Sheraton.

Lebanese or Turkish cuisine is to be found on most local menus. In addition, there are inexpensive Indian and Pakistani restaurants readily available. American fast food chains have outlets all around town and in the many shopping malls.

If you feel of need to be any closer to the water, have dinner on one of the many 'dhow' restaurants that cruise The Creek.

Dubai shopping festival

Now it's the time for you to fasten your seat belts as Dubai is warming up to have you at its huge, sprawling Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF), a period of non-stop festivities for 32 days from January 24 to February 24, 2008. This time DSF is going to focus on three elements that have come to characterize the annual event - Shopping, Winning and Family Entertainment.
A grand opening ceremony is being organised at Dubai Festival City (Jan 24) evening to usher in the thirteenth edition of the Festival. The opening will reflect the growth of Dubai over the years and include a combination of light and sound shows in the form of laser displays and dazzling fireworks.

Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF), known in Arabic as 'Layali Dubai', was first started in February 1996 by the Dubai government as purely a retail event aimed to promote trade in Dubai. Since then it has become an annual shopping, entertainment, and cultural extravaganza that continues to promote tourism in Dubai and draws people from around the world each year.

On February 15, 1996, the travel industry in the Middle East heralded the beginning of a new dawn - the birth of the most impressive shopping cum entertainment mega event. An entirely new concept, it succeeded brilliantly in showcasing what co-operation between private sector and public sector could do to create a mind-boggling achievement.

Initially, Dubai Shopping Festival was conceived as a pure retail event, the primary aim of which was to revitalise the retail trade in Dubai. It was later developed into a comprehensive tourism product in line with Dubai's far-sighted stance to set global standards in every field

Dubai Shopping Festival is basically a shopping paradise. Dubai is know around the world as such a paradise throughout the year, but they really lay out the red carpet during shopping festival month, with over 2,300 retails outlets participating, that offer everything imaginable from gold, perfume, haute couture, cars, electronics to handicrafts and textiles.

Along the lines of the stature that Dubai has achieved with its clarity of vision, innovation, initiative and drive, the Festival was shaped under the committed leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

As months of preparations went into creating Dubai Shopping Festival, the shopping festival matured into a major retailing cum entertainment extravaganza. The rest is history.

Today, one of the biggest beneficiaries of the event is the tourism sector. Hotels, travel agents and tour operators contribute to the selling of the event worldwide and it would be fair to assume, run at the peak levels of operation during the event.

Every year, Dubai Shopping Festival lives up to its promise of staging the most exciting activities for the whole family inspired by the theme One World, One Family, One Festival. As universal brotherhood, happiness, excitement, joy and adventure became the signature trademarks of Dubai Shopping Festival, the Festival itself became a tribute to the inherent ambition and strength of the people of the United Arab Emirates. Local and multinational brands acknowledged their faith in the event, and brands like Visa, Pepsi and Emirates Airlines became partners to DSF's growth.

Most hotels and appartments also get involved offering special offers during the period, even the world famous Burj Al Arab is included in the hotels. With all these special discounts available many would feel that would suffice, but Dubai goes quite a few steps further. They are scores of raffles that offer very attractive prices outlined below, and Emirates and most other airlines flying out of Dubai offer discounted airfares and much needed excess baggage allowances during the festival.

There are other events as well, including international fashion shows, children's events, streetside performances, nightly fireworks, film festivals, and many other cultural events that reflect the emirate's cosmopolitan character. Plus one of the biggest events of them all, the Dubai World Cup also takes place during the festival, and with a staggering US$ 12 million purse that makes it the richest horse race in the world - not something to miss.

The next DSF will witness fresh creative inputs and innovative promotions that will go a long way in attracting more visitors to the Emirate.
